Does a Rotten Tomatoes Score of 67% Fit Bombshell?

Updated: Jan 1, 2020

Jay Roach's newest movie, Bombshell, starring Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, and Margot Robbie so far has received a Rotten Tomatoes average grade of 67% from 203 critics. One of the most shared upon points among critics is that Bombshell felt "thin" and "flat" as well as having something "missing fundamentally at the core". Rather, my criticism fell mainly on expecting to see Megyn Kelly (Charlize Theron), Gretchen Carlson (Nicole Kidman), and Kayla Popisil (Margot Robbie) bring down Roger Ailes (John Lithgow) together. Instead, there was no true connection between the three and also had "no balance". Although all faced with the same dilemma, Kelly, Carlson, and Popisil seemed like they were acting independently from one another throughout most of the movie. Their storylines rarely crossed, almost making the movie feel like it was split into three different parts. Also, Bombshell focused more on Megyn Kelly's story rather than Gretchen Carlson's story and how, without her, Roger Ailes might not have been taken down.

Overall, Bombshell seemed to take an unexpected approach of describing Roger Ailes' dark side. Although Jay Roach took this different approach, I still had a more significant decider that would determine my choice of either walking out or staying for the whole film. It was costume design, casting, and the overall presentation of the characters. Colleen Atwood, head costume designer for Bombshell, truly held the movie together. Making Charlize Theron look, talk, and present herself that closely to Megyn Kelly is astounding, and made me feel that more invested in the film. Without these features along with the great acting of Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, and Margot Robbie, I might have walked out of the movie.

Tell me what you thought of Bombshell.
